Programs and services to help Manitobans in their search for a career are to be showcased this week during Career Week which was proclaimed by Competitiveness, Training and Trade Minister Andrew Swan, Education, Citizenship and Youth Minister Peter Bjornson and Advanced Education and Literacy Minister Diane McGifford.

Your, Future…Your, Way!, Manitoba’s Career Week message encourages Manitobans to take charge of their work and life by engaging in career planning that connects them to education, training and work pathways they are passionate about.

“Real achievement does not happen without a plan or the courage and commitment to carry that plan through,” said McGifford.  “Government is proud to be part of the career development process which offers a range of education opportunities from primary education through to apprenticeship, college and university.”

“In a time of rapidly shifting labour market and economic conditions, career and employment services play an essential role in workforce development,” added Swan. “They are also about ensuring Manitoba has the skilled workforce that will continue to be a primary driver of growth for a thriving economy.”

“The highs and lows of today’s economic climate require a modern approach to career development,” said Bjornson. “Career development systems have to evolve to meet the pressures and changing demands of the economy.”

The ministers pointed out the province is developing a co-ordinated career development strategy in consultation with community career development stakeholders.  The strategy Your Future…Your Way! establishes four key priorities to support the development of an efficient and effective career development system. They include:

• co-ordinated, coherent and seamless service delivery across the education/training system and workplaces based on current approaches to career development.

• access to quality resources and supports so Manitobans can make informed, training and employment choices;

• recognition of career development as essential to the social and economic well-being of Manitobans; and

• ensuring Manitobans have the knowledge, experience and skills to set and achieve career goals so they can adapt to the needs of the workplace.
