Three long distance truck drivers employed at a Steinbach based transport company were recently honored for their hard work and dedication to the trucking industry.

On December 12, the Manitoba Trucking Association presented seven “Driver of the Month” awards to professional drivers at a special reception; three went to truckers employed at Penner International in Steinbach.

These awards recognize professional drivers whose careers demonstrate excellent driving skills, exemplary safety records, outstanding customer service and dedication to the profession.

Combined, the three professional drivers have contributed 99 years of service and 11.7 million kilometers of driving locally and across the country.

Peter F. Wiens, from Steinbach, was named as Driver of the Month for February. Wiens has operated as a city and local driver for over 40 years, and has logged over 3.2 million accident-free kilometers in the Steinbach and Winnipeg area.

Dennis Barkman, also from Steinbach, has put in more than 27 years as a professional long-haul driver. He has logged over four million kilometers accident free in all highway conditions, including winter roads. He was named driver of the month for April.

For the month of June, Leonard Swedick, from Beausejour, was chosen who logged over 4.5 million accident free kilometers over the past 32 years on all types of roads and road conditions.

The Manitoba Trucking Association has honored top drivers for their outstanding driving records and service to the industry since 1979. However, this was the first awards ceremony hosted by the organization’s new President, Earl Coleman, from Big Freight Systems, also of Steinbach.
