Area amputees who recently joined The War Amps PLAYSAFE / DRIVESAFE float in The Power Smart / Winnipeg Jaycees Santa Claus Parade were proud to help mark an important milestone – the 30th anniversary of the PLAYSAFE Program.

Anola resident, Wesley Mustard, age 9, who is a right hand amputee due to a serious accident, rode the float as a Safety Ambassador. A special sign marked the 30th anniversary this year where many Champs like Wesley wish to promote the prevention of loss of limbs through the PLAYSAFE / DRIVESAFE Programs.

As a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, Wesley is eligible to receive financial assistance for artificial limbs, counseling services and to attend seminars.  As part of the National Safety Ambassador Team, the PLAYSAFE message uses a unique “kids-to-kids” approach to pass the message to thousands of children, while the DRIVESAFE message is being relayed to adults.

PLAYSAFE was started by War Amps CEO Cliff Chadderton who sees many children enroll in CHAMP after losing limbs in accidents that could have been prevented. It encourages kids to identify the dangers before beginning an activity with the help of ASTAR, the gold robot from the PLANET DANGER, who reminds them that they cannot replace their limbs like he does.
