In advance of the arrival of the Olympic Torch Relay, it is important to understand the perimeters regarding approaching the torchbearer during the relay.
The torchbearer will be surrounded by members of the Torch Relay Security Team. The team is comprised of on-duty police officers tasked with ensuring the safety and security of the torchbearer, the torch and the flame. These police officers, who wear a gray Olympic-style running suit to differentiate themselves from others, form a security “envelope” around the torchbearer. The Flame Attendants – youth representatives of the Aboriginal community – also wears a gray running suit but they have a scarf draped across their coats.
No one, including the media, is allowed within the security envelope.
The security team, along with the local police of jurisdiction, will clear a pathway for the torchbearer as the relay progresses. This is particularly challenging in locations where the crowds are very large. It would be appreciated if local media would encourage spectators to be mindful of keeping the roadway clear in any advance stories on the Relay visit.
Although, this information will also be addressed during the advance technical briefing to be held in your area by Relay organizers, the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit and your local police want to ensure all media have this information in the event your outlet is unable to attend the technical briefing.
A representative of your outlet is strongly encouraged to either attend or call in to listen to the advance briefing. These are held in each celebration community, usually held two days prior to the arrival of the torch.
