Canada has the best food and the best athletes in the world, and the Government of Canada is showcasing both in Vancouver at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz hosted domestic and international media to a breakfast feast highlighting the safe, delicious and high-quality foods that Canadian farmers produce. This event was part of the Government of Canada’s on-going work to expand and re-invigorate international markets.

“Our Government is proud to showcase the high quality food that our farmers produce because we know consumers at home and around the world want to buy it,” said Minister Ritz. “We will always maximize every opportunity to promote Canadian agriculture. We know that increased international trade will stimulate economic growth and deliver benefits to all Canadians.”

The breakfast brought together a team of top Canadian chefs from across the country, including Chef at Large Michael Smith, who each prepared distinct dishes featuring key Canadian export ingredients. The menu featured a variety of products including wheat, beef, pork, eggs, canola oil, maple syrup, lentils, soybeans, and ice wine.

Minister Ritz served up Canadian agriculture with farmer leaders from across the country, which included representatives from the Canola Council of Canada, Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, Canadian Beef Export Federation, Canadian Pork Council, Dairy Farmers of Canada, Canadian Horticulture Council and Vincor Canada.

“When our Canadian athletes step on to the podium, we know the safe, nutritious food Canadian farmers produce helped to get them there,” said Minister Ritz. “Our world-class athletes continue to prove that Canadian farmers produce food that truly is the choice of champions.”

In 2008 Canada exported $42.8 billion worth of food and agriculture to 195 countries.
