The City of Steinbach recently presented its 2010 Financial Plan at a public hearing held on February 2, 2010. The presentation provided the general public with information about the projects and programs that are to be initiated or provided in the coming year, some of which include:

• Landfill expansion – $2,000,000
• Pavement management program – $560,000
• Henry St. sewermain renewal – $400,000
• Deerfield Estates pathway – $500,000
• Cedar Crescent watermain renewal – $200,000

• Replacement of two pickup trucks – $70,000
• Leisure pool disinfection system upgrade – $25,000
• Dust control program materials – $36,000
• Sidewalk maintenance program – $50,000
Funding for these items is generated from a variety of sources. A capital grant in the amount of $7.0 million was approved by the federal government to offset the costs of the sewage lagoon expansion. Other grants totaling $600,000 will be received to help pay for the pavement management program and the tennis court rebuild. The remaining project and program costs will be funded by a combination of taxation and user fees.
In total, the City anticipates that $16.0 million of construction work and equipment purchases will be completed in the current year, in addition to approximately $11.0 million to be spent on operating programs among all City departments. This means that 2010 will be one of the most active and challenging in the City’s history.
