On January 28, 2009 at about 11:45 a.m., RCMP Headingley Detachment were contacted by a member of the general public advising the vehicle, believed to be Nicolas Huberdeau’s, was spotted one mile north and one mile east of Elie in the Rural Municipality of Cartier, Manitoba.

No one was in the vehicle. RCMP Headingley Detachment attended the location and confirmed the vehicle was the Mercury Grand Marquis last seen driven by Nicolas Huberdeau in St. Lazare.

RCMP Police Service Dog and the RCMP Search and Rescue Team in partnership with the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner, volunteer search teams from the South Interlake Mutual Aid District and the Morden Fire Department were dispatched to conduct a ground search of the area. At 2 p.m., RCMP Police Dog Service located the body of a deceased male individual 3/4 miles east of the vehicle on a snow covered gravel road.  Although police suspect his identification, positive identification will not be available until the autopsy is completed at the Health Sciences Centre.

At this point of the investigation, foul play is not suspected.

Update 01/30/09:

On January 30, 2009 the body found was positively identified as Nicolas Huberdeau.  No foul play is suspected at this time.  The formal autopsy at the Health Sciences Centre is still pending to confirm the cause of death.
