Highway 224 between Peguis FN and Fisher River FN remained closed as clean-up operations commenced following the rollover collision of a fully loaded fuel truck earlier on October 5 in the afternoon.

The fuel truck was carrying several thousand liters of diesel and gasoline fuel. The truck was headed north towards Fisher River when the rollover occurred.

The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner HAZMAT team was on scene along with personnel from Manitoba Environment, Manitoba Highways, Fisher River Cree Nation Fire and Peguis Fire Departments. Fuel from the overturned fuel truck will be pumped into other trucks. Leaking fuel has been contained.

Approximately 15 people were evacuated from nearby residences.

The 31-year-old truck driver sustained minor injuries and is expected to be released from local hospital. There were no other injuries.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation by RCMP and Manitoba Highways Compliance. Alcohol was not a contributing factor.
