This past year saw Steinbach’s new soccer park completed and the football field at AD Penner Park resurfaced, but the City’s Parks Department is still busy, trying to complete a few more projects before winter hits.
The infield of baseball diamond #3 at AD Penner Park is currently stripped down, and awaiting new surface material. The new surface will have sand material covering the infield right up to the dugouts whereas this diamond previously had grass in front of the dugouts. Parks and Rec Dept. Head, Russ Dyck, says diamond #2 received the same treatment a few years ago and diamond #1 has always had this type of infield surface.
Community gardeners in Steinbach will be happy to know that more gardening plots will be available next year. The community gardening site, located at the corner of Elmdale Street and Lumber Avenue, will have a minimum of 30 plots available next spring, providing more gardeners in the city with the opportunity to plant and harvest their own gardens. Community Gardening Coordinator, Ernie Klassen, said he is excited about the expansion as he already has a waiting list for next year. The City purchased the land and moved three houses this past year, which helped make the garden expansion possible. Along with the additional garden plots, more green space will become available in this area with seeded grass and picnic tables.
