Dozens of career-development learning opportunities will be available to Manitobans across the province this week, Healthy Living, Youth and Seniors Minister Jim Rondeau announced today at the launch of the second annual Career Week in Manitoba.

“The opportunities being showcased this week guarantee there is something of interest to virtually all Manitobans including students, employers, employees, teachers and mature workers,” said Rondeau. “We encourage everyone to take advantage of these events and use the information to maximize their potential.”

The launch took place in the rotunda of Union Station. The venue reflected the theme for this year’s week, Connected Communities Creating Opportunities, which highlights the necessity of both physical and technological connections and the opportunities they can present in the workplace today. In keeping with the theme, video links allowed people in Swan River and Thompson to participate in the launch.

Under Manitoba’s career development strategy, Your Future Your Way, career development services across multiple departments are delivered in an accessible and co-ordinated manner so that citizens do not have to seek information from a variety of sources, the minister said. The name of the strategy reinforces the need for citizens to be self-reliant managers of their own career and life paths.

“Using the tools helps individuals make informed decisions about their career path,” said Rondeau. “It is more likely they will find a job with a high satisfaction level and not only be happier, but also be better a contributor to their family, community and the economy.”

“Industry knows that there is a strong business case for ensuring that individuals make the right choices in training, education and employment,” said Bev Stuart, director of the Alliance of Manitoba Sector Councils, which supports Career Week activities.

Also during Career Week, Manitoba youth will gain a new perspective on how their family members earn a living with a day of on-the-job experience during Take Our Kids to Work Day on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Annually, about 14,000 Manitoban students go to work with their parents, guardians or other family members to learn what they do at work every day.
