On November 25, 2010, at about 12:30pm, Little Grand Rapids RCMP were advised of an overdue hiker.

Investigation revealed that a 53-year-old man from Pauingassi, Manitoba, had started out on foot through the bush the previous day, attempting to walk from Paungassi to Little Grand Rapids, Manitoba. This is reported to be about a 23 km trek through bush, rivers, and lakes. He was reported to be without any camping equipment or survival supplies.

Attempts were made by a local Band Constable, as well as RCMP to locate the man, but were unsuccessful. The man was reported to be well versed in woodland survival, however, due to the cold conditions and open water, a search was initiated.

At 3:45 Little Grand Rapids RCMP Detachment chartered a helicopter and began an aerial search. The man was located just before dusk at around 4:15pm. He was spotted walking along the shore of Family Lake, about 17 km from Pauingassi. He was reported to be very cold and wet having spent a night in the bush with a fire.

The man advised the search party that he hadn’t been lost, but as a precaution was taken to the nursing station in Little Grand Rapids to be assessed. He was found to be well after his cold wet night in the woods.
