OnĀ  December 1, 2010, at about 6:30pm, Carman RCMP as well as local Emergency Services and EMS were dispatched to the scene of a two vehicle collision on Highway 3, about two miles South of Carman.

Initial investigation revealed that a northbound semi trailer hauling hay bales was struck from behind by a older model Buick while it was turning off of the highway. The driver of the semi reported he felt something, but assumed it was the load of bales shifting and continued to his destination a short distance down the road.

The Buick sustained serious damage and the driver, a 79-year-old man from the RM of Dufferin, had to be extricated from his vehicle by emergency workers. He was transported to hospital in Winnipeg where he remains in critical condition.

At the same time as Emergency Services were working on the other car, the driver of the semi, a 54-year-old man from Rock Lake, North Dakota, began unloading hay bales at his destination.

While unloading, a bale fell off the truck, landing on the man and causing serious non life threatening injuries. An emergency 911 call was received from the truck driver and Police and Emergency Services responded. It was at that time that it was discovered that this was the second vehicle involved in the collision.

There were no other persons or vehicles reported to be involved in this collision.

Police continue to investigate.
