On February 17, 2011, at about 5pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP as well as local Fire and EMS were dispatched to a collision between a train and motor vehicle in the RM of North Norfolk.

Initial investigation indicates that a 2004 Ford pick-up truck was northbound on PR 34, approximately 2 miles north of Austin, Manitoba, when it collided with the side of an eastbound CN freight train.

The driver, an adult male, was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were three passengers in the vehicle, reported to be his children. All have been transported to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The crossing is reported to be controlled with lights and crossing arms.

Visibility was poor due to blowing snow at the time of the collision.

RCMP continue to investigate.

The deceased has been identified as a 36-year-old male from the RM of North Cypress, Manitoba.

The children involved remain in hospital at this time. An 11-year-old boy, in critical condition, a 15-year-old boy, stable and a 17-year -old girl, critical condition.

The names of the injured and deceased will not be released.

On February 22, 2011, the 11-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries at a Winnipeg Hospital.
