Mayor Chris Goertzen took some time yesterday to read to students at Woodlawn School in Steinbach in promotion of “I Love to Read” month. The students were keen and asked questions on wide variety of topics, keeping the Mayor on his toes.
“Literacy is such an important part of community building,” said Mayor Goertzen. “As a community, we need to encourage our young people and promote reading and learning continuously throughout the year.”
Woodlawn’s Literacy Support Teacher, Corinne Thiessen, explained, “This year, we made it a priority to promote literacy in a number of ways. Firstly, we wanted to inspire families to read together at home, so we participated in a “One School, One Book” project. We bought and sent home the novel ‘The Cricket in Times Square’ to every family and staff member and are following a schedule to complete the book as a community. Secondly, we have invited numerous guest readers to model and promote reading to our students. We wanted our students to see that reading is enjoyable for people of all ages and from many different careers. Whether our guests enjoy reading novels, magazines, or their Facebook “wall”, we want our students to realize that reading is an essential skill. Thank you to Mayor Goertzen for giving us the gift of his time by being a part of our “I Love to Read” month and for being a role model to our students.”
