Due to weather this past weekend, the Steinbach Pick up and Walk community clean up event has been postponed till Saturday, May 7, 2011.
Hundreds have already signed up to help beautify the city. Families, church groups, co-workers, and friends will be walking through the community picking up garbage along the streets and in the ditches and parks while getting some much needed exercise after our very long winter.
Last year, 1000 volunteers picked up over 5 tons of garbage. Grace Hiebert from the Southland Community Church, and one of the community organizers for Pick up and Walk, expects the numbers to be even higher this year.
We have 17 churches joining together in this amazing show of solidarity to help clean up our community. To see the ‘sea of yellow’ last year was incredible (not to mention safer for our volunteers). This event is a great gift to the community of Steinbach.
Chris Goertzen, mayor of the City of Steinbach, expressed his gratitude for the many people who have volunteered in this worth-while project over the past 6 years.
It is incredible to see how Steinbach’s Pick Up and Walk event grows larger every year. This event is a prime example of how devoted members of our community take personal action to help build pride in our city. On behalf of Council and our citizens, I want to thank the local churches and City employees who help to organize this important community event.
Many local businesses have also stepped up to the plate and shown their support by their kind donations. We would like to thank Bake World, Barkman Concrete, Canadian Gold Beverages, Centum Mortgage Express, Century 21, Diamond Construction, Earls Meats, Gislason Targownik Peters, Harvest Insurance, Horizon Livestock Poultry, LaCocina, McDonalds, Penner Trailer Sales, Safeway, S.A.R., Shear Effects, Smith Neufeld – Jodoin law offices, Sobeys, Steinbach Credit Union, Steinbach’s Flooring Canada, Superstore, Threeway Builders, Tim Hortons, and WS Machining
All Pick up and Walk volunteers will be meeting at the T.G Smith Arena in Steinbach on Saturday, May 7th at 9 am and everyone is welcome to participate (remember to wear your bright yellow t-shirt from last year!). From there, volunteers will be dispatched in groups of 6-10 and will be supplied with maps, routes, and garbage bags. People are encouraged to wear rubber boots, and to dress for the weather. A thank you lunch will be provided, free of charge back at the arena at noon.
