The City of Steinbach Aquatic Centre will play host to over 40 synchronized swimmers from Synchro Swim Manitoba and Aquatica Synchro on Sunday, January 20 when they showcase their skills at the first competition of the year. This will be the first synchro swim event held at the Aquatic Centre.
There will be young women ranging in age from 8-22 competing, including swimmers that are members of the Manitoba Provincial Team. In addition, there will be athletes that will be heading to the National Championships later in the year. The day of competition will begin and end with a demonstration of routines including one developed for the upcoming provincial meet by Aquatica Synchro.
Dean Janzen, Manager of the Aquatic Centre, says Steinbach is a natural choice to play host, “We have a fantastic facility and this is a growing sport that continues to be more and more popular in Steinbach.” Janzen attributes much of the growing popularity to Shelly Kroeker, a Master’s swimmer herself, who leads the recreational Steinbach Synchro team. Kroeker’s infectious love for the sport comes across in her coaching.
Routine demonstrations will be at 8:00am and just after 12:00 noon on Sunday, with competitions throughout the rest of the morning. Janzen encourages anyone interested in the sport to come out and watch.
