The City of Steinbach was pleased to hear of a recent decision made by the Federal and Provincial Governments to fund the City’s Wastewater Lagoon Expansion project. The project totals $10.5 million with Federal, Provincial, and Municipal Governments sharing the costs at $3.5 million each.
“City Council is very pleased with this announcement,” said Mayor Goertzen. “This project is vital for the continued growth of our city and this funding will ease some of the financial burden on Steinbach taxpayers. Council worked hard to make this happen and we are very pleased Minister Ron Lemieux and Minister Vic Toews recognized the importance of this project to the entire Steinbach Region.”
This infrastructure project is among 52 total projects across the province that will break ground quickly thanks to this joint federal-provincial investment. The governments of Canada and Manitoba have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and to flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in Manitoba communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
“The Government of Canada is committed to helping communities overcome their infrastructure challenges,” said Minister Toews. “Modern and reliable infrastructure investments such as these can attract business and create jobs for today and for years to come.”
“I’m pleased to partner with both the federal and various municipal governments on the Building Canada Fund which will provide economic stimulus for our rural communities today and into the future,” said Minister Lemieux. “The approved projects will have long lasting economic benefits for these communities.”
The City of Steinbach awaits issuance of its operating license from the Provincial Government before design plans can be finalized and the project can go to tender. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall of this year.
