Steinbach begins its annual sanitary sewer system cleaning of Steinbach’s sewer lines today. Over the next week or so, over 5000 meters of pipe will be cleaned and televised.
The City has hired Uni-Jet Industrial Pipe Services Ltd. to complete this year’s annual maintenance work. Steinbach’s wastewater line cleaning is expected to be complete by September 23rd.
Waterworks Department Head, Mike Heppner explains, “Each year, the Waterworks Department carries out routine preventative maintenance of the sanitary sewer system. Sections to be cleaned are determined based on information gained during monthly inspections, last cleaning or televising date, and critical level of service. We are trying to look at sewers every ten to twelve years so that we can prevent line failures. Since televising only began in the 1990s, we still have some sewer lines that have not been televised for over 20 years and we are working to get those looked at.”
The pipes are cleaned by a high-pressure flushing system that runs fresh water through the lines. Pressures ranging from 800 to 1500 psi are used to clear away any sedimentary deposits. Vacuum trucks pick up the water and sediments further down the line. A remote-controlled self-propelled camera vehicle is then sent through to inspect the line and ensure that the pipes are clean and the infrastructure is in good condition. The tracked machine that carries the camera is about 24” long and can be used to inspect pipes ranging from 6” to 18” in diameter.
Steinbach residents and businesses will receive a courtesy notification one day in advance if work to be completed will affect their property.
