On February 24, 2010, Eastman Immigrant Services, together with the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce, hosted the first Immigrant and Newcomer Employment Fair at the 55Plus Center in Steinbach.

Not only was this successful for attendees, but also for employers:

“This was a very successful event for Hytek – out of all the job fairs I’ve represented Hytek at in Winnipeg and Steinbach over the past few years, this was the most successful in that I had the most people approach me with sincere interest in employment with our company.”

What made this employment fair unique was that it brought job-seekers together with employers that are actually hiring. Another unique component was the information session at the beginning of the fair. A panel of local employers gave a quick overview of topics relevant to the immigrant job-seekers, such as the importance of a resume, cover letter and English language, cultural sensitivity and soft skills in the work place, commitment to the employer and what it means to work in a team.

18 countries or origin were represented, coming with a wide range of professional skills. Participants came from as far north Winnipeg, Zhoda, Niverville and other parts of the region. 50% heard of the fair through word of mouth alone.

The organizers of this fair are pleased with the outcome and are hoping to make this an annual event.

Eastman Immigrant Services and the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce wish to thank all the participants and exhibitors for helping to make this a successful employment fair.
