There are small signs that summer is coming to the City of Steinbach, Manitoba.

Soil in the planters along Main Street has been worked; mulch has been added to the boulevard shrubs; and the hanging flower baskets are growing and waiting in the greenhouse it is a time that most of us look forward to every spring the beautification of our city.

Landscape Technician, Joyce Purchase, and her beautification crew are back at it for another season and a few new plants will be making their debut around the city. “I’m trying a few new plants this year”, said Purchase. Some Hibiscus standards will be planted at City Hall and a bulb called Crocosmia as well as some Blue Satin Hibiscuses are going in at the Helena Loewen Garden by the Library.

Plant enthusiasts will be interested to know that the incredible banana plants will be back for their fourth growing season at the K.R. Barkman Park. Five out of the six original plants survived the third year, overwintering at the greenhouse. Last fall, the City’s Parks and Rec crew had to use a backhoe to dig the banana plants out!

If weather permits, over 400 flower baskets will be hung up on the boulevards along Steinbachs Main Street and Highway #12 the first week in June. City Parks and Rec employees typically work from about midnight to 6:00am to get all the baskets hung. Shortly after the hanging baskets go up, the other parks and gardens in the city will be planted.

Steinbach is well-known for its spectacular summer floral displays and residents and visitors all look forward to what Purchase and her crew have planned for this year.
