This summer, a beautiful wrought-iron ornamental fence and gate was installed at the Memorial Cemetery, located at the corner of Brandt Street and McKenzie Avenue. The project was initiated and funded jointly by Birchwood Funeral Chapel and the City of Steinbach.

“We are grateful to Birchwood Co-op for their contribution to the project”, said Mayor Goertzen, “and we are pleased the City and Council could partner with them on this meaningful project”.

“On behalf of Birchwood Co-op, I’d like to say that it’s been our pleasure to participate with the City and students of the Regional School to enhance the appearance of our Memorial Cemetery”, said Elbert Toews, Chair of the Birchwood Co-op. “It’s been a good partnership”.

“The new fence at Memorial Cemetery has been a very nice addition to the property”, said Russ Dyck, Parks and Rec Dept. Head for the City. “It is very visible for anyone who passes by the cemetery and we have already received numerous positive comments”.

The fence was designed and built in part by SteinMan Ornamental Iron Works, with the Steinbach Regional Secondary Schools welding students engaged on a voluntary basis to complete some of the welding. City Parks staff installed the fence in July.

“It was a pleasure working together with the City, Birchwood, and the SRSS on this project”, said Garnet Enns, owner of SteinMan.

The projected was completed at a total cost of $47,575 and will be maintained by the City of Steinbach.
