A southern Manitoba based team of researchers is hoping a low tech method of solid liquid manure separation can be commercially developed to help hog producers manage phosphorus.

Manitoba Agriculture Food and Rural Initiatives reports gravity based solid liquid manure separation offers an opportunity to reduce manure processing costs and the amount of land required for spreading.

Research underway at the National Centre for Livestock and the Environment suggests higher manure handling and labour costs in straw based swine housing may be offset by reduced veterinary costs and lower culling rates.
