Changes to Manitoba’s Retail Businesses Holiday Closing Act will come into effect Aug. 1, meaning Manitobans can start shopping on Sunday mornings this summer in municipalities that pass bylaws to extend Sunday hours.
New legislation would give retailers more flexibility in opening hours on Sundays and some statutory holidays, while protecting retail workers who would rather not work expanded hours.
The review of Manitoba’s Sunday shopping legislation is underway and public input is welcomed, Family Services and Labour Minister Jennifer Howard announced.
Manitobans are encouraged to celebrate this holiday season by buying local and shopping for foods, gifts and seasonal products produced and created by local farmers, processors and craftspeople, Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Stan Struthers said.
Retail businesses that have hours of operation on Sundays currently restricted to noon to 6 p.m. would be allowed to operate without restriction on Boxing Day under a proposed amendment to the Retail Business Holiday Closing Act.
