Today House Inc., an emergency homeless shelter, has been established in Steinbach to provide temporary shelter for homeless or street involved individuals.
In January 2012, a committee was established to respond to the ongoing issue of homelessness in Steinbach. This committee subsequently established Today House Inc. a not-for-profit, integrated community-based program that provides immediate, overnight emergency temporary shelter for individuals who are homeless or street involved.
Individuals in need of the service will be able to access temporary housing and supports. The shelter has a limited capacity; a maximum of 4 individuals can be accommodated at a time. All referrals must be made by a supporting community agency or a health care provider. Individuals cannot self-refer to the program.
Although access to housing is a basic human right, it can be a polarizing issue. The issue of homelessness is complex and often misunderstood. Today House’s board of directors hopes it can create awareness and understanding of other issues closely tied to homelessness such as struggles of the “working poor”, physical and mental health issues and substance use/misuse. Access to adequate housing affects overall health and development in our communities. The importance of housing in building vibrant communities and productive communities cannot be underestimated.
The Board of Directors are asking help in furnishing the house. Please contact todayhouseinc@gmail.com if you have donations.
