Steinbach Churches work together to encourage clean-up

The 10th annual Steinbach “Pick up and Walk”  community clean-up event will take place on Saturday, May 2nd with record number of volunteers expected. “Over 1200 volunteers showed up last year to clean up Steinbach and this was a record number. With more churches involved this year than ever before, we are hoping to beat that record”, Grace Hiebert, organizer for the event, explains.

So far 19 local churches are involved in organizing their congregants in groups that will be picking up garbage along the main streets and in the ditches and parks while getting some much needed exercise. Last year over 1,200 people picked up 10.36 tons of garbage in only 3 hours. Jason Heide, a pastor from the Steinbach EMC Church, looks forward to another great showing of volunteers. “The Pick-up and Walk is a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and serve one another and the community in a very practical way. There are few events that provide such an excellent opportunity for families, teams and small groups to serve together and teach the value of giving back and caring for our community.”

To get involved in this event, sign up at your local Steinbach church. All “Pick up and Walk” volunteers will be meeting at the T.G Smith Arena in Steinbach on Saturday, May 2nd  at 9 am and everyone is welcome to participate (remember to wear your bright yellow t-shirt from last year!). From there, volunteers will be dispatched in groups of 6-10 and will be supplied with maps, routes, and garbage bags. People are encouraged to wear rubber boots, and to dress for the weather. A thank you, complimentary lunch will be provided at the arena at noon.
