The P.C. Party of Manitoba has filed a lawsuit seeking to declare the way in which the NDP government introduced last summer’s PST increase as illegal. As Manitobans know, the NDP increased the PST from 7% to 8% without the legally required referendum.
As Progressive Conservative’s we committed to take all measures we could to hold the government accountable for not only breaking their promise not to raise the PST but also breaking the law. That meant sitting through the summer last year and making the application to the court at this point.
While it is impossible to predict the outcome of any court challenge, we feel that it would set a very bad precedent to allow a government to ignore an existing law without it at least being challenged in the court.
Of course, whatever the court decides, ultimately Manitobans will make a judgment on the NDP increasing the PST. Until then, we feel confident that we have kept our commitment to Manitobans to do all that we could to stand up for them on this issue.
