As the popularity of online shopping and gift cards continues to increase, the Consumer Protection Office is reminding consumers to take precautions, not only during this busy holiday season, but also throughout the year.

Online shopping can be convenient and accessible, but it can have disadvantages: consumers cannot personally evaluate the product being purchased, talk to the merchant in person or monitor the handling of credit card information.

To mitigate potential risks, consumers are advised to:

  • purchase from well-known, reputable merchants when possible;
  • research new or unknown merchants including checking references and reviews;
  • determine a merchant’s return and exchange policies and complaint-handling procedures;
  • confirm the full cost of the transaction including taxes, shipping, handling or import fees, and foreign exchange rates; and
  • check website security, usually indicated by a lock icon.

Consumers who buy or use gift cards should:

  • review the terms and conditions, restrictions and limitations;
  • check for signs of tampering and ensure the card’s barcode matches the number on the packaging;
  • keep the receipt and treat the card like cash; and
  • check the card’s balance by following the instructions printed on the card.

The Consumer Protection Office administers consumer protection legislation in Manitoba, including the Consumer Protection Act. The act provides protection in consumer-related transactions and includes certain protections for Manitoba consumers who pay for online purchases with credit cards.
