Steinbach RCMP are reporting that a 24-year-old Winnipeg man has been arrested and charged in connection to a recent dangerous driving incident that occurred on Main Street.

On August 26, 2023 approximately at 1:50am, Steinbach RCMP were situated on Main Street, adjacent to the fire hall, conducting stationary speeding enforcement on both east and westbound lanes.

Police say that during the enforcement, a westbound vehicle was observed exceeding the speed limit. The target vehicle was recorded at a speed of 132 kph in a designated 50 kph zone.

During the attempt to stop the vehicle, RCMP observed the driver of the vehicle attempting to evade officers by executing a U-turn on Main Street and Barkman Avenue. This maneuver resulted in a collision with cement objects located on the sidewalk, incapacitating the vehicle. The driver continued an attempt to flee the scene by alternately reversing and accelerating forward.

Officers eventually apprehended the driver of the vehicle and noted that a female passenger was also located in the vehicle. EMS attended to provide medical assistance to the female who suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police noted that considerable damage was incurred to the vehicle rendering it inoperable.

RCMP report that the 24-year-old male driver, from Winnipeg, is facing numerous charges related to this incident, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and operation of motor vehicle while impaired.
