The Swine Health Information Center is inviting input from all pork sector stakeholders as it completes the development of its 2024 plan of work.

Each year the Swine Health Information Center creates a new strategic plan and sets budgets for the coming year.

SHIC Executive Director Dr. Paul Sundberg says the Plan of Work helps guide activities across five strategic areas, including improving swine health information, monitoring and mitigating risks to swine health, responding to emerging disease, surveillance and discovery of emerging disease, and swine disease matrices.

We are out talking to and soliciting ideas from a variety of different places, certainly from pork producers but also from veterinarians, from diagnosticians, from researchers, from anybody that wants to give input to us as far as the value and the priorities for the Swine Health Information Center regarding diseases. That’s the where and we’re talking to people, we’ve been gathering that information throughout the year with the focus on getting this done so we can have the Board of Directors review it prior to January of 2024 and accept it with an associated budget.

We’re making an all-out effort to make sure we get as much input as we can right now through this fall. It has to do with the mission of the Swine Health Information Center, improving swine health information, monitoring and mitigating risk to swine health, responding to emerging disease, surveillance and discovery about emerging diseases and then some more technical things about the agents that cause diseases and emerging diseases in our pigs. We’re casting the net as wide as we can to get as much input as we can get.

We’ll consolidate all that into a draft plan of work and then at the end of this year, prior to January 1st, the SHIC Board of Directors will meet and they will hear about all of the input we’ve got and all of the things that we propose to go on and they’re really the ones that will make the decision about where and what to focus on for the next year.
