Selkirk RCMP have arrested a 13-year-old male from Selkirk and are looking for a 12-year-old male in relation to two separate fires that occurred earlier this month.

On May 8, 2017, at approximately 8:50pm, RCMP received a report of a dump truck on fire at a business on Pittsburg Avenue in Selkirk, Manitoba. As a result of the fire, extensive damage was caused to the truck and a nearby vehicle. On May 9, 2017, at approximately 6:10pm, RCMP were dispatched to another report of a fire. In this incident, the canteen at the stadium in Selkirk Park was destroyed. Police say that there were no injuries in either of these incidents.

Investigation determined that the fires were deliberately set.

RCMP report that a 13-year-old male has been charged with three counts of arson for the two vehicles and the canteen. He has been released pending a future court date.

“We take this very seriously,” said Selkirk RCMP Staff Sergeant Marc Samson. “We’re very fortunate there were no injuries in these instances, even though there was extensive property damage. Fire is unpredictable and very dangerous – someone could be seriously injured or even lose their life.”

Police are continuing to investigate these incidents and are asking anyone with information, to contact Selkirk RCMP at 204-482-1222 or call Manitoba CrimeStoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
