Rainy weather over this past May Long weekend may have hampered camping plans, but RCMP officers were still out on the roads during Canada Road Safety Week (May 16-22), focusing on high-risk driving behaviours.
Unfortunately, people were still making dangerous choices which resulted in the following:
- 33 people charged with impaired driving
- 18 alcohol or drug-related administrative suspensions
- 33 charges for failing to wear seatbelts
- 541 charges for speeding
- 15 charges for using a handheld electronic device while driving
- 262 other traffic-related charges
- 24 prohibited/suspended drivers
- 2 fatalities
Police say that a number of checkstops and high-visibility traffic campaigns were held in various locations around the province, including Virden, Thompson, Steinbach, Boissevain, Falcon Beach and Treherne. Patrols were also made on a smaller scale in many other locations.
RCMP note that educating the public in safe driving practices remains a priority of all RCMP Traffic Services Units and Detachments.
