The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has concluded its investigation into the circumstances surrounding a theft that took place at a convenience store in Winkler.
On January 28, the Winkler Police Service notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on January 18. According to the notification, Winkler police received a report on January 22, about a theft from a convenience store located on First Street. An adult male, later identified as an off-duty officer, was alleged to have exited the store without paying for an item.
As this matter concerned a theft by an off-duty officer, the IIU assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with Sec. 75(1) of the Police Services Act. IIU investigators were assigned to this investigation. The civilian director designated one subject officer. Investigators also spoke with the affected person.
Taking into account the evidence, affected persons’ wishes and the subject officer’s restorative efforts, no further action is required. Therefore, no charges are recommended and the IIU investigation is now completed and closed.
