The Manitoba government is inviting people across the province to recognize the many contributions of agriculture and take part in Farm and Food Awareness Week, September 14 to 20.
“Farm and Food Awareness Week is an opportunity to connect with the people who grow our food and to recognize the harvest season,” said Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn. “By choosing local ingredients, Manitobans are supporting farmers, food processors and local businesses, while also strengthening our communities and contributing to a sustainable and resilient food system. This week is about recognizing the people and communities who bring Manitoba’s food from farm to table.”
This year’s theme – Seize the Season: Appreciating Manitoba’s Harvest – encourages Manitobans to make the most of fall by engaging with nature, spending time with family and friends, cooking and baking with local seasonal produce, and exploring Manitoba’s farms, food, and communities. The theme highlights the importance of supporting local farmers and producers.
Highlights of this year’s Farm and Food Awareness Week include:
- Discover Agriculture on the Farm – a free, family-friendly event at the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre on Sunday, September 14. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits, meet Manitoba producers and learn where their food comes from. Additional details can be found at discoverag.ca.
- Local Food Day – Wednesday, September 17 has been proclaimed to celebrate Manitoba farmers, local ingredients and initiatives across the province that nourish and support families and communities.
- Fall Harvest Check List – a take-home checklist has been created to encourage Manitobans to enjoy local seasonal foods, visit farms and markets, and take part in harvest activities.
Throughout the week, Manitoba Agriculture will share videos, resources and partner activities on social media to highlight the diversity, sustainability and quality of the province’s agri-food sector. Manitobans are encouraged to celebrate local food, support Manitoba producers and explore the province’s agricultural bounty.
Nearly 40,000 Manitobans work in the agricultural industry, contributing significantly to Manitoba’s economy. To learn more about agriculture in Manitoba, visit gov.mb.ca.
