Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre advises that significant rainfall has occurred across portions of Manitoba over the past several days, resulting in localized flooding, rapid rises on rivers and streams and saturated ground conditions in some regions.

Over the past three days, parts of western and southwestern Manitoba received widespread rainfall exceeding 50 millimetres (mm), with localized areas receiving more than 70 to 100 mm. Additional significant rainfall was observed overnight on June 9 to 10, particularly across portions of the Interlake and eastern regions. Rain gauge observations indicate localized totals exceeding 100 mm, including approximately 121 mm near Woodlands, 230 mm near Petersfield and 255 mm near Stonewall. Additional stations reported rainfall amounts ranging from approximately 70 to 100 mm across portions of eastern Manitoba.

The most severe impacts to date have occurred in portions of the Parkland and western Manitoba regions, where exceptionally heavy rainfall over the past several days resulted in localized totals reaching approximately 150 mm near the Minitonas–Bowsman area, more than 60 mm in the Swan River area and more than 100 mm in the Shellmouth-Roblin area. These rainfall amounts have contributed to overland flooding and elevated water levels on several rivers and streams.

While additional precipitation is forecast through Thursday and Friday, the anticipated rainfall is not expected to significantly alter hydrologic conditions across most of western, central and southern Manitoba, where the heaviest precipitation has already occurred. However, forecast rainfall could have a more notable impact across eastern and northeastern Manitoba, where widespread amounts of 40 to 80 mm remain possible, with locally higher totals where thunderstorms develop.

The Hydrologic Forecast Centre continues to monitor several active flood alerts across the province.

Flood warnings have been issued for heavily impacted areas between Winnipeg and Lake Winnipeg, including:

  • Stonewall;
  • Woodlands;
  • Inwood;
  • Petersfield; and
  • Selkirk.

Flood warnings remain in effect for the Assiniboine River from Shellmouth Dam to Russell, Shell River near Roblin, Roaring River near Minitonas and Swan River near Minitonas.

High water advisories remain in effect for Lake of the Prairies (Shellmouth Reservoir), Red Deer Lake and Red Deer River near its mouth at Provincial Trunk Highway 10.

In addition, an overland flood warning remains in effect for portions of western Manitoba and the Parkland region, including areas east of the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border from Elkhorn to Barrows and extending northeastward toward Moose Lake. An overland flood watch remains in effect for portions of southern, eastern and Interlake Manitoba where additional rainfall may result in localized flooding concerns.

Residents are encouraged to remain alert to changing conditions, avoid driving through flooded roadways and use caution near rapidly flowing watercourses. Localized flooding, ponding of water and temporary drainage issues may continue in areas receiving heavy rainfall.
