As the result of a recent RCMP response to a break and enter near Onanole, a 42-year-old male officer was shot and transported to Winnipeg hospital with serious injuries.

On August 29, 2018, at approximately 9:30pm, RCMP officers from the Yellowhead RCMP Detachment area were responding to a report of a break and enter at a residence in the Municipality of Harrison Park, Manitoba, near Onanole. When officers arrived on scene and exited the police vehicle, shots were fired at them.

Police say that as a result of the incident, a 42-year-old male officer was shot and transported to Winnipeg hospital, where he remains in stable condition with serious injuries.

RCMP report that three suspects have been taken into custody and the search continues for an additional suspect. Police believed some of the suspects were on foot and others possibly traveling in a stolen black 2005 GMC Sierra extended cab pickup truck with Manitoba licence plate GBX 476. The truck has not been recovered at this time and the suspect at large is considered armed and dangerous.

A large police presence remains in the Onanole area and the RCMP Emergency Response Team has been deployed, as has RCMP Police Dog Services, RCMP Major Crime Unit, and Manitoba West District resources.

“We still have a suspect at large, so we continue to ask citizens to remain vigilant and to call 911 if they see anything suspicious,” said Assistant Commissioner Scott Kolody, Commanding Officer of the RCMP in Manitoba. “The public is reminded to check all doors and windows to ensure they are closed and locked as some of the suspects may be on foot. Be assured that all available and necessary resources were immediately activated when we became aware of the situation, and they will continue to be deployed for as long as they are needed. A member of our family was seriously hurt in this incident. The RCMP is a family and such circumstances affect every officer and employee coast-to-coast. We appreciate all the support we have been receiving, and those thoughts are being passed along to our injured officer and his family.”

Update

RCMP report that the fourth suspect is now in custody. At this point in the investigation, RCMP believe all suspects involved this shooting incident are in custody. There is no further threat to public safety at this time.

Twenty-one charges have been laid against four individuals in relation to this shooting.
