The 15th annual Discover Agriculture in the City happens this Saturday, March 16, at The Forks Market from 10am until 4pm – an event that opens up the world of agriculture to consumers with informative displays, hands-on fun, trivia contests, giveaways and recipes – and it’s all free.

The day starts with the University of Manitoba’s Food Fight, where students compete in developing a new food product and celebrity judges decide the winner. There will also be information kiosks where visitors to The Forks can learn about Manitoba-produced foods.

Beginning at 12pm, there will be activities for the whole family – including making butter, creating a tasty salad dressing from canola and designing a delicious pork rub. There will be an egg trivia game where participants can win handy kitchen utensils, as well as an agriculture trivia event where they can win a GORP bar. Or they can spin the “Wheel of Chicken” to win prizes and learn more about choices when it comes to buying chicken.

Visitors can look at cattle production through virtual reality glasses, and test their turkey knowledge with a game of “Plinko” and win a turkey baster. It’s all about teaching Manitobans about the food they eat, how it’s produced and how it can be used in health-promoting products.
