The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has concluded its investigation into an incident involving Portage la Prairie RCMP in which a suspect struggling with officers presented a knife and self-inflicted several injuries. Following the investigation, no charges will be laid against any officer.

On July 8, 2019, the Portage RCMP detachment received a call about a man in a residence without permission and in breach of a court order. When RCMP arrived, a 37-year-old male ran from the house and refused police orders to stop. When officers caught the man and brought him to the ground, he presented a knife and cut his own neck. Police gained control and transported the man to Health Sciences Centre where he was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.

The injuries and subsequent admission to hospital required that IIU investigate.

The man admitted to IIU investigators that he caused his own injuries; there was no evidence that any officer contributed to them.
