Emergency Preparedness Week, running from May 4 to 10, is an opportunity for Manitobans to learn more about the essential steps they can take to prepare for an emergency and protect their families, neighbours and communities.

“Emergency Preparedness Week is a great reminder that we are not powerless in the face of emergencies,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor. “There is a lot we can do, individually and collectively, to prepare and plan for potential hazards and emergencies, now and into the future. I would also like to thank the team at the Emergency Management Organization and other community leaders who work tirelessly to ensure we are ready to respond.”

This year’s theme is, ‘Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.’ Emergency Preparedness Week encourages individuals, businesses, and communities to understand their risks and learn what actions they can take to protect themselves against a variety of emergency situations.

In Manitoba, the risk of wildfires is greatest from April to October. Manitobans can play a critical role in mitigating wildfire risk around homes and properties by undertaking FireSmart activities gov.mb.ca.

Emergency Preparedness Week is supported by Public Safety Canada, working closely with provincial and territorial emergency management organizations, Indigenous organizations, non-governmental and private sector organizations that support activities at the local level.

The minister noted a test of the Alert Ready National Public Alerting System will occur on May 7 at 1:55pm. For more information on the test, visit alertready.ca.
