Headingley RCMP are reporting that a 47-year-old male from the Rural Municipality (RM) of Cartier was recently arrested and charged in connection to the discharging of his firearm at a stop sign.

On March 1, 2026, at 4:50pm, Headingley RCMP responded to a report of shots fired at a location on Road 56 North, at the intersection of Highway 248 in the RM of Cartier.

Police say that a male driver of a truck travelling south on Highway 248, observed another vehicle parked near the intersection with a barrel protruding from the driver-side window. As the southbound truck got closer to the parked vehicle, the male driver heard a bang and believed his vehicle had been struck.

Officers responded immediately and determined that the suspect was shooting at the stop sign and not the vehicle. Members noted that the southbound truck was not damaged, and the driver, a 41-year-old male from Swan Lake First Nation, was not injured as a result of this incident.

RCMP report that the suspect, a 47-year-old male from the RM of Cartier, was subsequently arrested for firearms related offences. He was later released on conditions, with a future court appearance in Winnipeg.

Manitoba RCMP takes these complaints seriously and they are investigated thoroughly. People are encouraged to obtain their Possession and Acquisition licences if they are handling firearms. As a reminder, the four fundamental rules of firearms safety are:

  • Treat every firearm as if it was loaded
  • Never point at anything you are not willing to destroy
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire
  • Be sure of your target and what is behind it.
