The Manitoba government has announced that it is helping communities provincewide strengthen health-care recruitment and retention with a new toolkit.

“Health care doesn’t stop at the clinic door, it’s built in our communities,” said Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara. “Across Manitoba, we’re working with local partners to showcase their communities and welcome health-care professionals, support them as they build their careers and help them put down roots. In communities across the province, providers are practising to a broad scope, working in close-knit teams and seeing the real impact of their care. That connection is what helps people stay.”

The community toolkit gives municipalities practical tools, guidance and ideas to welcome health-care professionals and support them as they build long-term careers and live in Manitoba, the minister noted.

Developed in partnership with municipalities and community leaders, the toolkit builds on strategies already working across Manitoba to attract and retain physicians, nurses and other health-care professionals, the minister said. The toolkit highlights practical, on-the-ground actions communities can take to support housing and childcare, help families settle in and create opportunities for social connection, they added.

Across Manitoba and around the world, health systems are facing increased competition for skilled workers. The Manitoba government continues to invest in training, recruitment and retention, while working with partners to help providers succeed both professionally and personally, the minister noted.

“The Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) welcomes the development of the toolkit and appreciates the collaborative work undertaken with our organization and municipalities throughout its development,” said Kathy Valentino, president, AMM. “As local leaders know their communities best, this partnership is essential to ensure the tools reflect municipal priorities.”

The Manitoba government will continue working with municipalities, health authorities and community partners to strengthen the health-care workforce and improve access to care provincewide.
