Virden RCMP, along with police service dog Czar, recently located a 29-year-old male suspect after he fled the scene of a disturbance at a nearby residence.

On July 2, at approximately 2:30pm, Virden RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence on the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.

Members learned a male had entered a residence he was not legally allowed to be in and refused to leave. When officers arrived at the home, the suspect exited out the back door and ran from the scene. RCMP, with the assistance of local First Nation Safety Officers, helped contain the area while RCMP Police Dog Services and the RCMP Remotely Piloted Aircraft System unit drove to the scene.

Police say that officers located the suspect approximately 4.5 kilometres from the residence. They then tracked the suspect through a large swamp area that was waist deep in parts until police service dog Czar and his handler caught up with him.

Following a brief struggle, which saw the suspect assault Czar, RCMP apprehended the suspect – who resisted throughout – and took him into custody. Czar was not hurt.

The suspect was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained during his interaction with the service dog. He was then transported to the RCMP detachment in Virden for processing.

RCMP report that the suspect, a 29-year-old male Sioux Valley Dakota Nation male, is facing multiple charges, including assaulting a police officer, resisting a peace officer, and failure to comply with an undertaking. The male suspect was remanded into custody.
