This morning, Mayor Chris Goertzen proclaimed Friday, April 17th, 2009 as “Ian White Day” in honour of the Steinbach native who now plays in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

“My family and I are thrilled and honoured to be receiving this recognition from the community!” said White.

“Ian White is an inspiration to many young athletes in our city,” said Mayor Chris Goertzen. “He is a great example of one of our own who has overcome great obstacles to achieve excellence on the national stage. Steinbach can be proud of Ian White and his tremendous accomplishments.”

Ian was accompanied by his wife, Tess, as well as his parents, Allan & Dianna White, and his brother and sister-in-law, Jon & Shar White and their son, Chris.

The proclamation read as follows:

“Whereas sport and recreation create some of the greatest experiences linking people globally, nationally, and locally, allowing for the promotion and support of our athletes; and

Whereas Steinbach native Ian White has achieved undeniable success in his hockey career through perseverance and dedication, representing Steinbach, Manitoba and Canada in the arena of sport; and

Whereas it is deemed appropriate that a special day be given to acknowledge and appreciate the importance of sport in our lives, and to give particular prominence to the talent and dedication of one of Steinbach’s successful athletes;

Be it resolved that I, Mayor Chris Goertzen, of the City of Steinbach hereby declare Friday the 17th of April 2009 as “Ian White Day” in the city of Steinbach.”

At the Allan Cup game tonight, special tribute will be paid to White.  Bob Smith, a past minor hockey coach of White’s, will be the master of ceremonies. White’s family will be on the ice with him while Deputy Mayor Elbert Toews and Steinbach Minor Hockey President, Weldon Plett, say a few words, followed by a presentation by the Minor Hockey Association.

Three items recognizing White’s achievements will be unveiled at tonight’s game – a framed Maple Leaf jersey, a Canada World Junior jersey, and a framed photo collage recognizing the World Junior experience.  After unveiling, the items will be placed in the lobby of the T.G. Smith Centre for all to enjoy.

White will perform the ceremonial puck drop to start the Allan Cup game.
