The chair of Manitoba Pork says international trade, human resources and business risk management are among the key issues that will be focused on as Canada transitions to a new federal government.

Canadians elected a new majority Liberal government on Monday.

George Matheson, the Chair of Manitoba Pork, says his organization will be focusing on a number of key issues.

Three of the issues that will be influenced federal will be, number 1, international trade. Of course we are definitely are an exporting nation of pork.

The second one, human resources, very important to us of course. We take a lot of labor and that’s hard to come by of late.

I would say the third would be business risk management. Of course there’s a lot of risk in our industry, fluctuating commodity prices primarily and we would like to see some insurances that would level that for us.

The pork industry in this country is a great economic engine. It employs many people and it consumes a lot of feed grains which would be expensive to export out of this country. It adds a lot of value to other aspects of agriculture. Its value every year is in the neighborhood of $5,000,000,000 and exports amount to approximately $3,000,000,,000 a year.

In a country of 35,000,000 million people those are impressive figures and we would like to impress upon Canadians in general that the pork industry is important to the gross national product and the general well being of all Canadians.

Matheson says it was a very interesting election.

He says after 9 or 10 years the general public wants a change, wants to move on to other things, he wishes Mr. Trudeau and the Liberal government the best in the future and says pork producers will work well with them.
