This past Friday was a special day for nine kids, ages 5-12, from the Steinbach Arts Councils Summer Arts Day Camp entitled, Discover Why and How.

The group made their way over to the City of Steinbach’s water tower and water treatment facility in the morning where Waterworks Department Head, Mike Heppner, provided them with a first-hand look at where their water comes from and how it is treated for their use.

Heppner explained various aspects of the City’s water system, including how the water tower holds 450,000 gallons of water and is 154 feet tall. When he asked if any of the kids knew why there was a light on top, a young girl quickly answered correctly, so that airplanes see it at night! Heppner said, It was encouraging to see the kids interest in being water stewards, which includes small things like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth.

The kids faces and questions during the tour showed their interest and excitement about the new things they were learning.
