On Monday, September 13, the City’s Waterworks Department began reading water meters in Steinbach.
This year, just under 4,100 water meters will require readings. These readings will provide the basis for the quarterly utility bills issued in November.
Meter reading is conducted by two Waterworks Department employees and takes 5 to 7 days to complete. These City employees can be identified by their safety vests and the City of Steinbach identification cards that they carry. The readings are not invasive, unless the meter is located inside the house or the read-out is not working, in which case City employees will request entry into the house.
In the fall of 2007, Waterworks staff began using a wireless reading system in addition to traditional meter reading. The wireless system allows staff to receive readings from the sidewalk, eliminating the need for access to private properties and also reducing reading times. Sites that have the wireless units installed are those that are difficult to reach or have hazardous conditions for the meter readers to enter.
