With summer fast approaching, there are noticeably more pedestrians and cyclists out enjoying the warm weather. However, these vulnerable road users are at significantly higher risk of injury in the event of a collision with a motor vehicle. The RCMP has already responded to 5 deaths in 2011 that involved pedestrians or cyclists.

An average of 17 pedestrians and cyclists are killed each year in Manitoba due to vehicle related collisions – the majority of these deaths occur in rural Manitoba. Roughly 70 more pedestrians and cyclists are seriously injured each year. Many of these collisions can be avoided if drivers and pedestrians take extra effort to recognize their role in reducing these types of collisions.

Vehicles must stop and yield the right-of-way to all pedestrians, whether at marked or unmarked crosswalks. Drivers are reminded to keep conscientious of pedestrians, especially at intersections and other areas where they may be vulnerable.

Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to remain aware of the vehicles around them. Even if you have the right of way, it does not protect you from the carelessness of some motorists. Wearing bright colored clothing and paying extra attention at intersections can significantly reduce the chances of being hit by a vehicle.

The month of June has been marked as “Cycling and Pedestrian Safety month” for all police agencies in Manitoba, including the RCMP. Police will be extra vigilant this month in conducting enforcement in areas such as school zones, construction zones, and other areas where pedestrians and cyclists are present.
