Check your mailbox this week for a brochure from Citizens for Steinbach, a citizen-initiated group concerned about the spending and borrowing of the Steinbach City Council.
According to co-organizer Joel Hartung, during the library expansion debate, he took a closer look at the City’s budget and what he saw was concerning. “In 2008 the City’s debt balance was $2.6 million. In 2010, it’s projected to be $10.1 million. This is an alarming increase that will impact taxes and hurt our city financially.”
Included in the brochure is a petition for concerned Steinbach residents to fill out. It will be submitted to the Municipal Board to consider as they review the library expansion project. Other co-organizer Susan Penner notes “We wanted to provide a way for ordinary citizens to have their voices heard on the borrowing and spending issue. I think people will be surprised at what they see when they look at the City’s numbers in the brochure.”
