Obituary

Dad went home to be with Jesus on Monday, September 17, 2018 at the age of 80, and his heart is now healed.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Grace, son Bob, daughter Karen, son-in-law Stan and grandchildren: Erik, Neal and Katie Wiebe. Also left to mourn his passing are two sisters, one brother, one brother-in-law and their families.

He was predeceased by his parents, one sister and one brother-in-law.

Dad was born to Peter and Susanna Schmidt on April 20, 1938 in Altona where he grew up on a farm and then moved to Winnipeg in his late teens.

He was baptized in the CMC church in June 1962 and married Grace Schellenberg on September 9, 1962. When asked recently what he had liked about her, he answered without hesitation “Everything”! After living in Winnipeg, Niverville and Mitchell they moved to Steinbach on August 9, 2018.

His jobs involved plumbing, heating, carpentry and maintenance, these talents came in handy when the family needed work done and he was always more than willing to help. He had been working on his own project the day he passed away, He was always trying to make things more efficient and had his home running like a well-oiled machine. The condo had been their home for just over a month. After his second heart attack in February, when surgery was not an option, he was anxious to get Mom into a smaller place. At this time his relationship with the Lord deepened, and he was at peace. He had experiences during this time that he believed were divine interventions and not just coincidences.

Dad adored his family and was very proud of them and their achievements. Not many of the grandchildren’s sporting events were missed. He loved the family camping trips and Grand Forks outings, blending in with the kids in the pool. Dad and son Bob shared an interest in animals and in earlier years they raised chickens, sheep, goats, rabbits and birds. One of Dad’s hobbies last year were handcrafting bird cages for raising exotic birds.

Harry and his larger than life personality will be missed by those who knew him.

The family wishes to express appreciation and gratitude for all the prayers, words of encouragement, cards and expressions of sympathy received from family and friends.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with a viewing prior to the service. The burial will follow at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
