Obituary

Our very special mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Sarah Peters (nee Unrau), of Grunthal, MB, was ushered into her eternal rest and loving Saviour’s arms in the early hours of Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019 at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, MB, at the age of 89.

Sarah was born to Isbrand and Maria Unrau on Aug. 5, 1929, the sixth of 11 children, at Rock Lake in Western Manitoba.

She is survived by two sons, Peter Brian (Edith) and Harold (Diane); one daughter, Carol (Dwayne) Martens; eight grandchildren, Mike (Helen), Brian (Brenda), Keith (Lorilee), Matthew (Joanna), Sara (Mark), Erin, Jordan and Jeremy; nine great-grandchildren, Emma, Adam, Ilsa, Olivia, Caleb, Lauren, Madison, Abigail and Jared; three sisters, Justina Krahn, Elizabeth (Albert) Toews and Anne Unrau; one brother, Bill Unrau; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Martens.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Peter G. Peters; her daughter-in-law, Elaine Peters; two sisters, Nettie and Mary; and four brothers, Neil, Dick, Hank and Johnny.

Mom was baptized upon confession of her faith in 1950 and married Dad on July 30 of the same year. She was a hard worker and threw herself wholeheartedly into everything she did. Whether it was taking care of her family or working outside the home, she never gave less than her best effort.

Mom was an excellent cook and loved fellowshipping with her family and friends over the meals she had prepared. Puzzling, crocheting and reading were some of Mom’s favourite hobbies. She also loved music and enjoyed the many programs she was able to attend, whether it was a grandchild’s recital or the groups that came to sing at both Fernwood and the Menno Home.

Mom’s faith was her foundation and through all the trials of life she held fast to the assurance that Jesus was her Saviour. She prayed daily for her family, friends, and anyone else the Lord laid on her heart, and God’s love was evident in her words and actions. It was her deepest desire that everyone come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Mom’s family was her world and she loved nothing more than spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She cherished every visit and we knew that her home was always open to us. Mom was an affectionate person, telling us often how much she loved us, and hugs were a requirement every time we went to see her.

John 11:25 says, “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”

The viewing will take place on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional to follow at 7:30 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel with the interment to follow at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Advancing Indigenous Missions, 235 Princess St, Winnipeg, MB, R3B 1L9.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the nurses, staff and chaplain of the Menno Home for their care and friendship towards Sarah.
