Obituary

It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and sister, Jeannine Gisiger. Surrounded by her family, she left us on May 18, 2019 at the age of 80, at the De Salaberry District Health Centre. Formerly from Windsor Park in Winnipeg, she resided at the Chalet Malouin in St-Malo.

As well as her daughters, Pierrette Timshel (Ian) and Michelle Gisiger, she leaves to mourn her passing the father of her children, Jean Gisiger, her three grand-daughters, Meite (Dave Fardo), Bonnie (Kristjan Anderson) and Manon as well as her great grandson, Félix. Her brothers, Henri, Paul-Émile, Claude and Roland, her three sisters, Irène Lecomte (Florent), Thérèse Bouchard (Ernest) and Hermance Roy (Marcel) and many nephews and nieces also grieve her loss. She was predeceased by her father, Joseph Bisson in 1971, her mother Marie in 1988, her brother Armand Bisson in 1991 and her sister, Rita Fortier in 1994.

Jeannine was born on December 31, 1938, the seventh of ten children. She had mixed feelings about having her birthday on New Year’s Eve. On the one hand, she was always guaranteed a great party, but on the other, she did not always have a birthday cake. Beautiful and charming, she had her pick of young beaus but finally settled on Jean Gisiger, whom she married in 1958. While still a child on the farm in Dunrea, Manitoba, she often played school with her younger siblings so it was not surprising that when her daughters were well established in elementary school, she went to university and became a teacher. Later, she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating from university just before her daughter, Pierrette.

Jeannine had many qualities. Blessed with a beautiful voice, her alto harmonies enriched parties with family and friends. Jeannine, known for cutting a stylish figure, had many interest such as home decorating, gardening, nature, current events, playing cards, travelling, and her little dog Oka. Jeannine enjoyed various crafts, art, dancing and laughing. She was however, especially interested in her family. She was always there, available to listen to the heartbreaks of her daughters and granddaughters as well their victories and day to day life experiences. What was truly remarkable was that when her health seriously deteriorated, she faced each challenge with great courage and grace, and this for many years. The residents and employees of the Chalet Malouin, as well as hospital staff always commented to her daughters about her positive and pleasant attitude. In spite of serious mobility issues, Jeannine was able to enjoy a trip to Tofino with her beloved daughters in 2016 as well as a trip back to Dunrée in the summer of 2017. During her final years, playing cards, completing puzzles, savouring her garden and enjoying the company of loved ones brought her much joy. Her passing leaves a tremendous void in the hearts of those who loved her most.

The family would like to thank all those who helped us look after Jeannine, specifically the employees of the Chalet Malouin, home care staff and the nurses at the Morris and St-Pierre hospitals. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the charitable organization of your choice. The celebration of her life will be held at Église St-Martyr, Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 11:00 am.

En plus de ses filles Pierrette Timshel (Ian) et Michelle Gisiger, elle laisse dans le deuil le père de ses enfants, Jean Gisiger, ses trois petites filles, Meite (Dave Fardo), Bonnie (Kristjan Anderson) et Manon et son arrière-petit-fils, Félix. Elle a perdu son père, Joseph Bisson en 1971, sa mère Marie en 1988, son frère Armand Bisson en 1991 et sa sœur Rita Fortier en 1994. Ses frères, Henri, Paul-Émile, Claude et Roland en plus de trois sœurs, Irène Lecomte (Florent), Thérèse Bouchard (Ernest), et Hermance Roy (Marcel) et de nombreux neveux et nièces ressentent aussi la douleur de son passage.

Jeannine est née le 31 décembre 1938, la septième de 10 enfants. Elle avait des sentiments mixtes au sujet de la date de son anniversaire. D’un côté, il y avait toujours une grande fête, mais trop souvent, on négligeait de lui faire un gâteau. Belle et charmante, elle avait son choix de jeunes hommes mais elle a enfin choisi Jean Gisiger, qui elle a épousé en 1958. Lorsqu’elle était enfant, Jeannine jouait souvent à l’école sur la ferme à Dunrea, Manitoba avec ses frères et sœur plus jeunes, alors ce n’est pas surprenant que lorsque ses filles étaient bien établies à l’école élémentaire, elle a choisi de poursuivre une carrière en enseignement. Plus tard, elle a terminé un Baccalauréat en Arts, obtenant son diplôme universitaire juste avant sa fille ainée, Pierrette.

Jeannine avait bien des qualités. Douée d’une belle voix, ses harmonie d’alto retentissait aux regroupements de famille et d’amis. Toujours bien mise, elle s’intéressait au décor de la maison, au jardinage, à la nature, à l’actualité, aux jeux de cartes, aux voyages, et à son petit chien Oka. Elle aimait bricoler, l’art, danser et rire aux éclats. Ce qui la préoccupait le plus cependant, c’était le bien-être de sa famille. Elle était toujours là, à l’écoute, quand une de ses filles ou ses petites-filles avait le cœur brisé ou voulait tout simplement partager une nouvelle importante, ou moins importante. Ce qui était surtout remarquable c’est quand sa santé a détérioré sévèrement, elle a fait face aux épreuves avec grand courage et grâce, et ceci pour de nombreuses années. Les résidents et employés du Chalet Malouin, et le personnel des hôpitaux commentaient souvent son attitude positive et plaisante. Malgré les défis de mobilité, Jeannine a trouvé de la joie dans un voyage à Tofino en 2016 avec ses deux filles et à Dunrée lors de l’été 2017. En dernier, les parties de cartes, compléter des casse-têtes, et les visites d’êtres chers comblaient son bonheur. Son passage laisse un grand vide dans le cœur de ceux et celles qui l’aimaient le plus.

La famille tient à remercier tous ceux qui nous ont si bien aider à prendre soin de Jeannine, notamment les employés du Chalet Malouin, les aides en soin de santé et les infirmières de Morris et du Centre médico-social De Salaberry. En plus, la famille demande qu’au lieu de donner des fleurs, de faire un don à l’organisme charitable de votre choix. La célébration de sa vie aura lieu le 15 juin, 2019 à 11h à l’Église St-Martyr.
